WOLF CREEK HERITAGE MUSEUM NOTES by Virginia Scott MUSEUM HAPPENINGS A busy week getting ready for the fundraiser on Saturday. The event was a success with close to a hundred people in attendance. The food by Alexander's was delicious as usual, the music by the Sheriff and his outlaws entertained us while we ate and visited. Everyone enjoyed the silent and live auctions. We thank everyone who donated items for the events and the many corporate sponsors that donated to the event. This event provides us with funds to buy supplies or sponsor exhibits for the museum. Allows us to continue developing and documenting the history of our county and our citizens. I represented the museum at the quarterly Trails meeting in Plainview on Thursday. After the business meeting we toured the Jimmy Dean Museum on the Baylor Campus. This is a new museum that tells the Jimmy Dean story and is an excellent museum. A great weekend trip. Debbie Simpson's paintings are on exhibit in our art gallery. An exhibit of Marilyn Monroe by Pam Haines is on exhibit in the meeting room. The reception for Debbie will be Sunday, November 6 at 2 pm. Otis Shearer will present a program on WWI at 3 pm. This is the 100th anniversary of the War. Hope you join us for this event. HISTORICAL MUSING This week is the anniversary of the entry into force of the UN Charter (the founding document of the UNO) in 1945. In 1948, the United Nations General Assembly declared October 24 as United Nations Day. Franklin D. Roosevelt coined the term "United Nations", which was first used in 1942 when 26 nations pledged to continue fighting together against the Axis powers. Only 45 members comprised the UN when it was founded. Today, there are 193 members. The Theme of This year's Concert is 'Freedom First' featuring Korean Traditional Music Orchestra, Harlem Gospel Choir, the Hungarian State Opera. This Year the UN is committed to 17 goals that will propel the UN towards a better future for all on a healthy planet. you can go to www.un.org and read about the goals and the UN plans. Two last interesting points about the UN charter. 1) as a charter, it is a constituent treaty, and all members are bound by its articles. 2) Article 103 of the Charter states that obligations to the United Nations prevail over all other treaty obligations. You can assist in meeting these goals by using only energy efficient appliances and light bulbs. |
